You can make your own oven cleaner using salt, baking soda and white vinegar.
1. First option: After using the oven (while it’s still hot), generously sprinkle
burnt spills with kitchen salt and leave it till the oven cools. Then, remove leftovers
using scrapper. Done!
2. Second option: Baking soda (which you can by in any supermarket) can absorbs grease
and grime to a certain degree.
- When the oven cool, generously sprinkle baking soda powder over the bottom of the
oven (about half centimeter thick).
- Then, use sprayer to spray water all over the baking soda till it become half firm
paste. Close the oven door and leave it to rest for few hours.
- Check it from time to time, spray little bit more water if the paste becomes to
dry and scrape it thoroughly against the bottom of the oven using dish-brush. This
way the paste absorbs the grease from the oven’s bottom.
- After few hours take the paste out of the oven completely, remove leftovers using
a scrapper, wipe it off using damp cloth and leave the oven open to dry out. Done!
3. Third option: Do the same as option-2 but spray white vinegar on the baking soda
instead of water to get better results.
The advantages of using these homemade oven-cleaners are: low cost, relatively safe
for your skin and eyes and no unpleasant vapors.
The down side is that homemade oven cleaners usually act much slower and provide
inferior results in comparison with heavy-duty (caustic) oven cleaners. Therefore,
you will probably need to scrape longer and harder!
From my experience, homemade oven-cleaners are good more for daily maintenance than
for cleaning real greasy ovens.
